Players, jaded after earlier matches

Play was not up to the usual high standard when the fourth round of the Canterbury women's hockey competition was contested on Saturday:— It was the second round of matches in as many days and players looked a little jaded after the competition games on Friday. Carlton scored an easy win over Digbys. Woolston proved too strong for Harewpod, Burnside struggled to beat University, (and Cranmer comfortably b?at Linwood United: Scores:— Carlton 9. Digbys 0. Woolston 4, Harewood 2. Cranmer 3, Linwood United 0. Burnside 1, University 0. Points:— Carlton 4, Burnside 3a, Woolston 3J, Cranmer 2, Harewood 2, Linwood United 11, University £ Digbys 0. Digbys v Carlton Carlton, showing superior fitness and combination, decisively beat Digbys. Shirley Haig had a field day, scoring six goals, with Lorraine Langam getting the remainder. Throughout the match Carlton was on attack, and with Haig virtually unmarked in the circle goals were scored at will. Digbys, showing the effects of Friday’s matches, could not contain the super-fit Carlton team. Carlton had made some changes to its forward line. Nicki Turner, playing on the right wing, showed good penetration as did Isobel Knight on the left.

A feature of the match was the way Carlton used both flanks and with great understanding of each player’s position tested Digbys’ usually reliable defence. Digbys’ goalie. Beth McEachen, played well in clearing the ball, but Carlton was always there to pounce on the rebound and put the ball Into the back of the net. Linwood United v Cranmer Linwood United started well, pushing Cranmer back into its half and forcing a penalty corner. Cranmer soon recovered and play was then contained in Linwood’s half.

Cranmer used its right wing, Bonnie Paniora, to advantage, the first goal coming after a well-timed centre when Barbara Mitchel was on hand to put the ball into the net.

Cranmer was not satisfied, keeping the play in Linwood’s half and getting the reward with its second goal. It resulted from a melee in front of the goal. Mitehell again scoring. Throughout the play Linwood used the left flank, but penetration -was very difficut with Phillipa Ashton, at right half for Cranmer, effectively clearing the ball. I

Paniora. playing well, scored Cranmer’s third goal, making a

solo run, and then drawing the [Linwood goalie. I For Linwood, Vivienne Cowles showed dash and Cranmer’s centre half, Rosemary Gardner, passed well. Burnside v University

This Was an uninspiring match played mostly in mid-field between the Burnside forwards and the University defence. Unfortunately the University forwards did not seem to have the ability to capitalise on the many attack-! ing movements started by its! strong defence.

Only once in 70 minutes were the Burnside forwards able to penetrate and score. Judy Phil-; lips. Burnside's international player, Julia Allan and Janej Earnshaw made many attacking runs with good passing only to have them collapse under the! determined University' defence. On one occasion, Jane Earnshaw, Burnside’s speedy leftwing, cut through a gap and found the net. Late in the game Burnside netted a high hard shot which was disallowed.

Woalstop v Harewoad

Woolston boat Harewood, 4-2, on a fast ground at Cottesmore. Woolston attacked from the start and was unlucky not to score In the first minutes. It held a terrial advantage which was inter- ’ upted at times by some fast ' breaks down the left-wing by Harewood’s Alison. Sutherland. Lois McArtney scored Woolstons two first-half goals. Early' in the second half. Hare'wood deservedly scored when I Marie Flannery picked up a good !pass and made no mistake. A istroke was awarded to Woolston soon after which Chris McCauley confidently netted high to the goal-keeper’s right.

Harewood kept play in Wool[stons half but was forced back by a good run by Sue Duggan (down the right flank and Margaret Read was in position to net the re-bound. Harewood was undaunted and a good passing move was rewarded with a penalty stroke. Alison Sutherland scored putting the ball past Sue Maloney, the Woolston goal-keeper.
