Human Rights Commission
Sir, — Mrs Alice Baxter (April 21) supports Mr Sides’ so-called Christian attitudes. May she look again at Christianity, before supporting a system that is the antithesis of that which she claims to support. The basis of Christianity is that all men and women are equal regardless of any other factor, simply because, to the believers, their Christ died for all mankind. To deny work to a non-Christian on the basis of his lack of “faith” simply means that the employer is acting in an un-Christian way. I would not seek work from any employer advertising for a “Christian,” as it is too good an opportunity for the employee to be oppressed, simply by the use of his “faith” by the employer. If the Human Rights Commission’s charge against Mr Sides fails it will mean that any employer, in placing an advertisement, may state “No Christian need apply.” Let us not have society ruled by extremist viewpoints. — Yours, etc.,
R. P. DALZIEL. April 21, 1980.
