Wolf City at Sumner

A new Christchurch rock group, Wolf City, have stationed themselves out at the Cave Rock hotel in Sumner, and are beginning to find popular support. The group has been at the Cave Rock on Friday and Saturday evenings for the last five weeks, and, according to the bass guitarist, Peter Trumic, the response to the band has been improving all the time, even filling the main bar.

Wolf City was formed at the end of 1979 as what Trumic considered to be a format band. The group opened the Rugby Bay rock concert, near Nelson, in January, and got an excellent reception. The group plays a mixture of new wave (XTC), to Pink Floyd, as well as stepping into the past with the occasional Stones number. The band is also concentrating on original material, and one of the songs, “Train,” is getting an airing on 3ZM. Wolf City was changing over from an emphasis on keyboards to percussive side, because people were a lot more interested in dancing, Peter Trumic said.

The group has an unusual instrument included in its “tools,” an electric bassoon, which is played

by Donald Rae, who has two years classical-music training at Wellington Polytechnic behind him. Rae also plays keyboards. The other members of the band are Stephen Seller percussion; Warren Hydes,

vocals; and Murray Wright, synthesised guitar. Besides all the overseas acts coming this way, Christchurch can also look forward to hearing some top New Zealand bands in city hotels.

Next week, the Crocodiles are playing at the Hillsborough Tavern, and other tours include Street Talk, Spelling Mistakes, and Toy Love, the latter booked in late June.
