Addington Market

The store calf market was slightly over-supplied at Addington yesterday, but values for medium-sized calves were similar to last week. s

It was fortunate the yarding was reduced from 2937 last week to 1809 yesterday. If more calves had been yarded selling would have been difficult. Some observers said the buying power in the calf market was falling off. Graziers who had sold prime beef before the drop in the schedule in the last two months had been prepared to pay top prices for good calves. But buyers who had sold beef after the schedule drop were only interested in lighter, cheaper calves, the observers said. Quality yesterday • was generally poorer than In recent weeks. This was the main reason values for lighter calves eased by up to $l5. But the demand for the medium-sized calves helped maintain buoyancy in the market. j Steer calves made to $2Ol,

but were generally $142 to $164. The best heifer price was $144, but most heifers were $lO6 to $127. ; » - The yarding of 692 adult cattle (520 last week) sold reasonably well, considering the falling beef schedule and the lighter condition of most of the yarding. Only cattle carrying a reasonable amount of weight found any real favour. Sales of store cattle included:— Steer calves: J. .J O’Garroll (Hawarden), 24 Angus at $132 to $160; Annavale Estate (Springfield), 30 Angus cross at $146 to $154; D. J. Store sheep The store lamb maiiUt yesterday was generally easier, although lines of well grown Romney ewe and wether lambs sold well and were mainly in line with late rates.

The yarding Increased from 6804 last week to 8955, and so lambs offered at the end of the sale were hard to sell. There were some passings. Over-all the decrease would have been 50c, although some lighter lambs may have lost more value than this.

There was a very limited offering of older ewes. Only 132 two-tooths (552 last week), and 1099 adult ewes (1401 last week) were in the yarding. Apart from the odd exception these • were small lines and mediocre in quality. However, prices paid reflected this and the sale was reasonably satisfactory. Sales of store sheep included: — I Wether lambs: H. G. Collins (Glentunnel), 383 shorn Romneys at $12.30 to $15.20; B. Rogatski (Ahaura), 332 shorn Romneys at.sll.Bo to $13.40; N.
