Invitation declined
For the second time the Canterbury Rugby Sup-Union’s executive has turned down an invitation for the Country team to play an away game against Marlborough this season. A letter received. from the Marlborough union at the executive’s meeting yesterday asked it to reconsider its earlier decision to decline the fixture.
Marlborough gave several alternative dates, and offered billets for the players on the night before the match. However, the meeting decided to “shelve the fixture until 1981 or 1982” because of the already tight schedule, and for financial reasons. . . ' '
ItWas also decided to approve Queensland Country’s plan to bring a referee when it tours
the northern part of the Sout Island next month. The referee wants billets, wit local referees at Rangiors Grevmouth, and Ashburton an will’ study the New Zealand in terpretation of the rules. The North Canterbury Sub Union is likely to give him f game to referee on the Saturday before the match between Queensland Country and Canterbury' Country, scheduled for May 18 at Rangiora. One member of the executive. Mr D. McGiffert, has donated a tankard which will be contested between the sub-unions on an under-18 basis. The,. Munro Shield, formerly for under-19 players, will now be changed to Colts (under-21), if this meets with the approval of the donors family. .
