Waimairi landfill review
■'.The Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee will consider opening the proposed Waimairi landfill site between the Bottle Lake Forest Park aijcl the sea earlier than planned to ease the dumping load at the Bexley tip. /The Christchurch City Council decided on Monday to. ask for the March, 1986, opening date to be reviewed because of strong opposition tb the extension of rubbish dumping at Bexley. i-*Mr D. J. Rowlands, a rffember of the council. and the refuse committee, yester-
day called for a report to be prepared on the matter immediately without waiting for a formal request by the council. The report will, be discussed at the committee’s next meeting-in May. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay), who is also a member of the committee, said extended dumping at Bexley was “a matter of very great concern to our council and a signi f i c a n 11 y representative group of ratepayers.” Mr D. B. Rich said that advice from engineers in the last two years had been that
it was not possible to bring • the opening date of the landfill site forward. ! The committee’s chairman : (Mr J. M. McKenzie) said , the closing of the Heathcote an J Waimairi dumps would have an impact on Bexley. It could have two years "on its . own” before the metropoli- ! tan scheme could relive the pressure for rubbish disposal. Because of this the comrpittee might have to look at “other proposals” but it was yet inappropriate to discuss : these in public.
