Red Cross appeal under pressure
The New Zealand Red Cross must raise $BO,OOO more than last year in its house-to-house appeal tomorrow to avoid possible service and relief programme reductions. ’ Because of inflation, $630,000 has to be. raised throughout New Zealand this year, according to - the Red - Cross secretary-general (Mr L W, .Talbot),
A total of $550,000 was given last year, but Mr Talbot said that .the Red Cross had been hit?hard by rising fuel: and petrol costs, which could not be recovered.
More than half the donations were spent in New Zealand, he said. About $61,000 was raised in North . Canterbury last year. This'year’s -target for the district is $66,000.
