N.I. stayers dominate Marlborough Cup

By

W. R. CARSTON

Even allowing for the possibility of “drop-outs” after the Otaki meeting on Wednesday it would seem a pretty safe prediction that after the Marlborough Cup tomorrow the rec ord books will show there has been another North Island victory.

As far as honours are con-i cerned the south has not done tod badly in the Marlborough Racing Club’s feature races in the last few years. South Island trainers: have saddled four of the last, eight winners, including i Grand Country which i carried off the thick end of; the purse 12 months ago. But this time, by weight of numbers alone, the odds; are stacked heavily against i the prospect of a South Is-j land victory. At acceptancetime last Monday northern: stayers in the field out-1 numbered their southern | contemporaries by almost | six-to-one and that ratio' could become much greater. So the prospect of a southern victory might have to rest entirely with Hi Magic. And this Ricearton-i trained mare will not be the; most forlorn hope. Three i starts back she managed an: open-class middle-distance • successfully at Oamaru and meantime she ■ has put two• further minor placings on I record against tough opposi-i tion on her home course. If the handicapper’s as- : sessment is correct the Awa-puni-trained Vizier is going : to be the one they all have ■ to beat but other strong : prospects from the same i area close to the top of the ; handicap are sure to be Var- 3 riamo and Moutoa Treasury... The Te Rapa-trained Meed 1 will also come into con- 3 tention on the strength of his last-start second at Ro- , torua and Ask The Question, ' a member of Bruce Marsh’s, team with a first-class: record on the course, will * also be high on the list of popular fancies. RACE 1 FIRST ON-COURSE DOUBLE 10.50 MAIDEN $1350; 1400 m.

Must take beat- ) ing here if he has held that , form but hard to fancy on I effort at Otaki on Wednes6 mi MEED (18) 53.5 (6 g Bellborough — Game Girl, G. A. Rogerson, Te Rapa). Inclined to mix his form a bit but must appeal after good second last time out over middle-distance at Rotorua. P. Calkin 7 1638 ASK THE QUESTION (2) 52.5 (5 m Balios — Precious Jewel, R. B. Marsh, Woodville). Was one of the "stars” among the lower grade stayers at this meeting last year and some of recent efforts suggest she could be a force to reckon with again this time. 8 1602 BRAZEN PRINCESS (7) 52.5 (6 m Zamazaan—Brazen Lady, C. A. Bowry, Otaki). Does not run them all alike but her autumn form seems to be her best. Won three open-class handicaps in a row about this time last season and came up with her best run this term when successful at Hastings last month. Another bold effort when second at Otaki on Wednesday. P. Smith 9 4134 HI MAGIC (14) 52 (5 m St Puckle — Magic Light. B. R. Mills, Rlccarton). Two solid races for minor placings among the open stayers at C.J.C. Easter meeting followed all-the-way win at Oamaru. Bold front-runner which could be seen to advantage around the turns here. D. Walsh 10 1373 FATHER LOU (13) 51 (4 g Allgrit — Clara Mondee. R. Nolan, Hawera). Toiled honestly for minor placings at recent Nelson meeting and must command respect on that score alone. Lone win this season was at Stratford in December. II 8090 CHIEF ORE (15) 50.5 (7 h Denagh — Ups and Downs, D. Enright, Foxton). Comes up with the odd minor placing but form all-round not inspiring. K. Robinson 12 3661 LE CALEB (12) 50 (7 g Aureate II — Our Christina, D. Eager. Stratf-ord). W T as finding it hard to improve on minor placings in a pretty busy season until successful at long odds at Otaki on Wednesday. P. Didham 13 0141 COUNTRY MILE (4)-49.5. (6 g Sovereign Prince — Jack’s Countess, N. McFarlane, Trentham). Won twice among the lower grade stayers at Nelson and could match up here although this is tougher. S. Woodsford 14 00 BARKLEY BOY (19) 49 (6 g Creosote — Trixeen, T. McDonald, Otautau). Has shown nothing in two starts this time up but should be at improving stage although barrier draw will not help. R. Hewinson 15 2108 BELLONA (3) 49 (4 m Battle Waggon—Sound Lease, C. A. Bowry, Otaki). The most recent of two high■weight wins this season was at Hastings early last month. Failed in two starts in the lower grades at Trentham meantime. p m c 16 7507 MISTY CLOUD (16) 49 (5 g Hasty Cloud — Beautiful Dreamer, L. Gestro and W. McEwan. Hawera). Fair . race when resuming among sprinters at Tauherenikau on Easter Saturday. 17 2102 PENNIANNE (6) 49 (4 m Ribotlight — Caplin, J. E. Bourne, Ricearton). Has looked very good over the middle-distances while coming up through the classes and although, this will be toughest test yet will be a light-weight to respect. 18 0980 SUNGOLD (1) 49 (4 m Rapier II — Suntime,*©. En-, right, Foxton). Nothing in her recent form to get enthusiastic about. 19 1298 TWO CAN PLAY (8) 49 (4 m Double Nearco—Bonny Play, W. . G. Ivil, Awapuni). Bogged down on heavy track in two starts at Manawatu centennial meeting but won in lesser class over this distance on a firm track at Trentham four starts back. Emergencies: Sungold, Pennianne, Barkley Boy. RACE 7 T.A.B. TREBLE 2.40 p.m.— GREIG HANDICAP

Might go well on his home track J fresh but still hard to fancy. J 13 0065 SHIFTEASE (5) 52 (5 g , Shifnal—Striptease, G. A. ; Rogerson, Te Rapa). Fair effort among the sprinters 7 at Ellerslie last Saturday but would still have to be taken 1 on chance on his form allround this season. 1 P. Tims 1 14 009 TOKO RIVER (13) 52 (6 , g Mellay—Nelson River. C. ’ A. Bowry, Otaki). Could ’ hardly be regarded as a top ” chance in this, his first race , since early December. ’ 15 1765 FANTAN (8) 51 (3 £ i Namnan—Tenderly, R. B. Taggart. Ricearton). Has won three races this season, the , most recent being the Miss Mannequin Stakes at Wiogatui in February. " Capable on her day but this 7 could be a bit short. “ R. Mudg- £ way, Feilding). Has done ’ nothing notable since beat1 ing lower class metric milers 'at Hastings on New Year’s ' Day. 19a 9415 KAITOA (2) 50.5 (4 g s Brigade Major—Elena, S. B Hammersley, Woodville). Highweight winner on his ® home course early in - January but hard to rate 1 much of a chance at this distance. 1 20 5348 TOM BOWLING (4) 50.5 (6 g Copenhagen ll—Messa1 lina, Mrs J. T. Hay. Mayfield). Has turned in the odd good run since coming ’ south but would have to z improve on his eighth at his lone start at the C.J.C. c Easter meeting to have a 1 winning chance. 1 20a 1777 UP TRUMPS (22) 50.5 • (3 g , Abridge Member—t AngelaijeJla, K.
