Vote for works doubled

PA Oamaru Since taking office in 1975, the National Government had doubled the vote for water and soil works to $28,045,000, an increase of 13 per cent, said the Minister of Works and Development (Mr W. L. Young) at the New Zealand Irrigation Association’s conference in Oamaru.

“I believe the magnitude of work on water and soil activities in New Zealand is not always given the recognition it deserves,” he said.

Spending had increased from $3.98 million in 1976 and 1977 to $B.l million in 1979 and 1980, he said. Fifty-six rural water supply schemes at various construction stages would supply a total of 705.000 ha. Fifteen irrigation schemes were under construction for an area of 65,000 hectares. About half the $1.5 million for irrigation scheme maintenance and works was recovered through the present water charges, he said.
