Smoke with a real buzz

Greymouth reporter

A man charged with possessing cannabis leaf, intended to use it for smoking bees out of ..a wall, he told Judge Bisphan in the District Court at Greymouth yesterday. Evan William Dalzell, aged 23, a beekeeper, of Kotuku, pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing cannabis leaf on April 2.

Senior-Sergeant J. A. L. Wright said that 17.2 grammes of leaf were found on a bedside dresser when the police visited Dalzell’s home.

Asked by the Judge for an explanation, Dalzell said he had bought the cannabis from a friend, not for his "own use but to smoke out a swarm of bees from a wall. ‘‘Wouldn’t it affect the bees?” asked the Judge.“No, it’s harmless to them,” the defendant replied. “I usually use hemp, but I thought I would use cannabis this time.”

“I still 'think it might affect the taste of the honey,” said, the Judge, in convicting the defendant and imposing a fine of $l?5.
