New ballet theatre
A new theatre at the Southern Ballet Company’s site in the Christchurch Arts Centre will be finished at the end of July. The chairman of the Southern Ballet Theatre Trust (Mr G. W. Rountree) said the theatre would be a venue for small ballet productions. Productions could run for short seasons every two months.
Mr Rountree said it was hoped that the theatre, which would cost a total of $26,000, would make, money because of its small overheads. It had mainly been funded by donations. People had paid $2O to fund a seat. The theatre would seat about 125. In the financial statement presented at the annual meeting of the trust,
the trust showed a loss of almost $lOOO. Mr Rountree said the loss had not been expected, but was a “fact of life” with inflation. The trust intended to budget its way out of the deficit this year. Mr Rountree said the trust would apply for a bigger grant from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts f rtnncil this vear.
