Manageress fined on brothel count

The manageress of ai Christchurch sauna and! massage parlour, Janifer Ruth Cann, aged 40, was fined $5OO when she appeared for sentence in the District Court yesterday on a charge of keeping a brothel.

The defendant, who was represented by Mr K. N. Hampton, had pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the charge of keeping a brothel at her sauna and massage parlour in Cashel Street, between October 30 and November 8 last vear.

She had been convicted and remanded for sentence by Judge Paterson. Imposing the fine yesterday the Judge said the defendant readily offered the “additional” service to the officer concerned, “which indicated that the service was readily available.”

He took into account that the offence was- minimised to some extent in that she had been the only person involved and had not offered the services of other people. However, he said such, premises were licensed for conducting a business and the defendant well knew the limits of that permission. The Judge lifted the interim suppression order on the defendant’s name.

Also remanded without plea to April 30 on the same charge was Kevin, Te Wakaitie Takina, aged 30, a freezing worker. Glynn Michael Parker, aged 23, who faces a charge of supplying LSD to the constable on March 13, was remanded to June 24 for the taking of depositions.

Raymond Lovell Edwards, :aged 22, unemployed, was (remanded to June 19 for the (taking of depositions.
