Firemen lift ban

Christchurch firemen have lifted their ban on routine cleaning and maintenance that they imposed on Monday in a dispute over the early retirement of a fires man.

The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the South Island Fire Brigades’ Union (Mr R. C. Wells) said the Fire Service Commission had agreed to extend the fireman’s employment beyond the previous date, and it was hoped that the insurance company would in that time make it clear whether the man was entitled to compensation. The man, who is not a fire-fighter, is at present on holiday leave owed to him.
