Drivers’ Federation elects new president
PA Wellington The secretary of the Southland Drivers’ Union, Mr Dougal Soper, is the new president of the Drivers’ Federation.
Mr Soper was elected unopposed at the federation’s annual conference in Wellington yesterday. He replaces Mr K. G. Douglas, who did not seek re-election.
Unlike his predecessor, Mr Soper is not a member of the Socialist Unity Party, though the new national vice-president Mr Jackson Smith, who is secretary of the Wellington Drivers’ Union, is an S.U.P. member. Mr Soper, who is also national secretary of the
[Plumbers and Gas Fitters’ Union, has been vice-presi-dent of the federation for the last six years and secretary of the Southland Drivers’ Union for 10 years.
Mr Douglas told the federation’s conference that he
did not seek re-election because he was no longer actively involved in the, leadership of the drivers and not because of the extra work involved in his being secretary of the Federation of Labour.
