Local golfers to the fore

Ashburton reporter Two of the four teams to contest this morning’s semifinal of the national women’s autumn handicap match-play foursomes golf championships at the Brandon links, Ashburton, will tee off on their home course.

Four rounds of competition have decided the semi-finalists, who are Nan Davis and Karen Hungerford, and Jeanette Lovett and Marion Marshall (both Ashburton), Pam Archbold (Ashburton) and Pam Tocker (Russley), and C. Hamilton and D. Harvey (Templeton). In . sunny conditions yesterday some upsets occurred. The morning’s third round saw the .lowest-handi-capped combination, Anne Seed and Elaine Taylor (Methven) beaten by M.esdames Marshall and Lovett, 4 and 2.

Another favourite pair, Liz Douglas and Rae Todd (Invercargill), was put out of the Tunning in the fourth

round by Mesdames Hamilton and Harvey, 3 and 2. The performance of the local teams has been a feature of the event. Three other local teams reached the third round.

A favourite has yet to be found for the final. Mrs Davis and Miss Hungerford will give away three strokes to Mesdames Hamilton and; Harvey this morning, while Mesdames Marshall and Lovett will concede five to Mesdames Tocker and Archbold.
