Rangers club opts for status quo

The Rangers soccer club... would prefer to see the organisation of the Rothmans League unchanged next year, in spite of proposals to alter the competition to fit in with the national team’s World Cup programme. The club has rejected the suggestions of the chairman of the New Zealand Football Association’s promotions and sponsorship committee (Mr Charlie Dempsey) for a two-month break in the league next season, and for only the second half of

the competition to count towards prize money. Mr Colin Boatwood, the club’s president, confirmed that a vote taken at the committee meeting earlier in the week had shown a preference for the status quo to be maintained. “We are not interested in any of the proposals,” said Mr Boattwood. “We cannot see any future in the alternatives, and very few South Island clubs can afford, for example, to fly teams to Gisborne knowing there is nothing at stake.”
