Film favourites
Home showings of movie favourites such as “The Sound of Music,” “How the West was Won,’’ and “Kelly’s Heroes,” are becoming an increasingly popular means of entertainment. Film Services, at 39 Matipo Street, Riccarton, have found that children love the big screen. Cartoons such as “Bugs Bunny,” “Woody Woodpecker,” “Tom and Gerry” and “Roadrunner” are particularly well received at children’s birthday parties. Other favourites, for general family enjoyment include the comic “Keystone Cops,” “Charlie
Chaplin,” “Laurel and Hardy,” the “Three Stoodges” gang comedies, “Humphrey Bogart and Cowboy and Indian films. Film Services are also very rpoud of their G. certificate range of films for all ages. Mr Morris Jackson, the owner of Film Services (established in 1947) says the company hires out films throughout New Zealand, the Chatham Islands and Australia as agents for Twentieth Century Fox and M.G.M. the two main film studios. A large number of entertainment films are. hired out for children’s
parties. 21st birthdays, wedding anniversaries, family reunions and other special occasions but the majority of films and,film projectors are hired out to schools and Government departments . for educational and business purposes. Winter screenings of sports films for ski enthuiasts are also shown at the Imperial Hotel. Apart from the film library the company also has a repair workshop. The advantage people have in hiring from Film Services is that they do not have to pay the cost of freighting the film down from Auckland. The films allocated to the agency are changed every month and people can book in advance. Mr Jackson says the “Eiki” 35mm, 16mm and Bmm automatic projectors are very easy to operate.' The films range in length from 10 minutes to three hours and there are some silent, black and white movies. Film Services also has the new* conemascope Bmm and 16mm wide films available for hire. .
