A woman died after she fell into this sewer sump hole in the driveway of Avis Rent-a-Car, at 94 Gloucester Street, just before midday yesterday. Staff saw the woman’s feet protruding from the uncovered hole and pulled her out, but she was found to be dead. The woman was ISABEL MARGARET WATSON, aged 88, of 120 Park Terrace, Christchurch. The branch manager of Avis Rent-a-Car, Mr Graeme Orange, said that a plumber had removed the sump hole’s cover to clear a blockage.
“He went away to get some more equipment, and « just after that one of our . staff saw the woman’s legs sticking out of the hole,” 5 said Mr Orange.
“We pulled her out, but she was dead when the ambulance arrived,” he said. The hole, which is about
one metre wide and 1.5 metres long, was halffull of liquid. The police and the Labour Department are investigating the accident.
