‘Pressures on teachers’
PA Hamilton An increasing incidence of alcoholism, mental illness, and absenteeism among primary school teachers, is evident, the South Auckland Education Board heard yesterday. “Expressions of disquiet being made by advisers, inspectors, and principals must be recognised,” said the district senior inspector of primary schools (Mr L. Smith) in his report to the board. “While these reflect a growing malaise in the com-
munity at large, they . are symptomatic of the pressures and tensions our teachers are working under.” Mr Smith said these emerged in the growing rate of alcoholism, mental illness, and absenteeism, mostly in the middle and older agegroup. Many more older teachers were seeking early retirement than previously. “When questioned on reasons for this, the invariable answer is that the pressures of the school have become intolerable,” Mr Smith said.
