Games barred to S.A.
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg The Soviet Union has barred South Africans f-om attending the Olympic Games at Moscow, a travel agency has said. A spokesman for the agency, which was acting on behalf of the South African National Olympic Committee, said about 700 people had applied for tickets to the Games. “The Russians have refused to allocate us any tickets, which also obviously means South Africans would not be given visas,” he said. South Africans are normally refused visas to enter the Soviet Union, but the National Olympic Committee had hoped the ruling would be relaxed for the Games. South Africa was expelled from the Olympic movement several years ago because of its racial policies. The agency spokesman said a plan to fly enthusiasts to London to watch the Games on television was now being considered.
