Koiro Trelay may find form at Otaki today

Special correspondent Wellington One of the country’s best stayers, Koiro Trelay, could (get back on the winning i trail when he tackles the Ta ;Timi Kara Handicap, first (leg of the Otaki double this ; afternoon. : Koiro Trelay was third in (the Wellington Cup and in (three runs since has failed ■to find a track to suit. [ Koiro Trelay has won one race this season, the Manawatu Cup. but he had little luck in the Auckland Cup and his splendid third in the Wellington Cup stamps him as a stayer of class. An easy Otaki track, which is likely today, will still give Koiro Trelay the chance to show his best ability. Decibel and Prince Trelay look the hardest for Koiro Trelay to beat. Decibel, was fourth when she tried the Diana Stakes at Ellerslie. That event was won by an in-form Super Saree. Decibel has drawn the outside of the field, but she could offset that by making full use of the long run in down the straight. Prince Trelay took out the Besley Handicap at Waverley last time. He won so easily that he must be a major chance here also. Prince Trelay is trained by Noel Eales who will have a strong hand in the race due to the presence as well of Varnamo. Today’s start for the eight-year-old will be the first for Varnamo since his return from Nelson which brought a first, in the Nelson Cup, and a second from three starts.

Top Grade looks a leading chance also. He set a track record winning at Nelson, while Sousa was first and ran two seconds in his three outings on the circuit. The second leg looks wide open and on class alone Pastrol could come out on top in the Taipua Handicap. The apprentice Mervyn Bishop, will ride Pastrol and will claim the full four and a half kilos to make the weight Pastrol will carry 50.5 kg, a luxurious mark. Bishop won his first race at Tauherenikau over the weekend.

Smart Fella along with Cielle could press Pastrol hard.

(Smart Fella was second to J Coober’s Queen in the 'w ei g h t-for-age Feilding [Stakes. Cielle was second at 'Awapuni twice and her form •has been as consistent as 'any runner in this field.
