Kellogg grant to Lincoln

Lincoln College has received a grant of $278,000 from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, of Battle Creek, Michigan, to establish a computer-based farm management information unit.

Known as the Kellogg Farm Management Unit, it will serve as a centre for the development and use of management aids, which will be available to all sectors of New Zealand’s agricultural industry, including the individual farmer. Dr Peter Nuttall, coordinator of the unit’s activities, said that it would provide a focal point for research, and for extension people who were interested in the development of decision-making aids. However, such aids would not be available im- , mediately, he said. An as- ■ sessment of the require- ' ments would be made, and the management aids developed would be rigorously tested before being offered for general use.’ . Users of the aids will ■ be charged on a cost basis. 1 The income .received will ; enable the ijpit to continue , to function <after the Kellogg financial support ends. Local organisations will be encouraged to help fund the unit.
