Railway hoardings

Sir, — Could the Minister of Transport advise why Mr McGuigan’s promise of elimination of railway hoardings along the public highways has not been attempted? I am under the impression that they should have, been disposed of by December, 1978. These eyesores on the- landscape, many advertising liquor outlets and brands, which _ the Minister, being also Minister in charge of traffic regulations, should be alert to, seem to multiply rather than decrease. The small amount of revenue compared with t'. ; actual loss annually by the Railways, and the improvement of the. landscape, if hoardings disappeared, should encourage the Minister to act without delay. — Yours, etc., M. O’NEILL. ’ March 29, 1980. [The Acting Minister of Railways, Mr Warren Cooper, replies: “The removal of hoardings promised by December, 1978, applied to those in rural areas, and outside station precincts. This objective was , achieved on time. I should be very surprised if there are still hoardings alongside highways, other than near railway stations, which are owned by the Railways’ Department. There are, of course, other organisations apart from Railways who erect advertising hoardings.”]
