Numbers sought for rail trips
Tramping clubs, a social club, a country-music club, and a church youth group are among groups that have responded to proposed rail* way excursion trips. Interested people were in< vited by Rail Action, a Christchurch-based group, to register their interest in the proposal at the Environment Centre early in March. A spokseman for Rail Action, Mr S. Rice, said that only about 15 replies had been received, but several of these had come from groups representing up to 40 people.
Mr Rice said that he would have liked a more extensive response, but he was pleased about the interest shown in the proposed trips.
However, Rail Action would not approach the Railways until there were enough people to fill a train. About 260 were needed, he said.
The most popular destination from Christchurch was the Arthur’s Pass and Otira region. Rail Action hoped to arrange a “snow special” train to the area towards the end of June,- Mr Rice said.
