Knife thrown at Mrs Gandhi
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi A man threw a knife at India’s Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi) as she left a ceremony in New Delhi yesterday but the knife hit a security aide, the Press Trust of India reported. The police and members of Mrs Gandhi’s security staff overpowered the man, the Press Trust reported.
The incident occurred when Mrs Gandhi was leaving the grounds of Parliament House after garlanding a statue of the late harijan (untouchable) leader, Dr B. R. Ambedkar.
According to onlookers, Mrs Gandhi had finished her speech at the cere-
mony and was walking towards a waiting car when the knife was thrown at her.
The spring knife with a 10cm blade missed Mrs Gandhi and struck a security aide, the Press Trust reported. Mrs Gandhi, aged 62, returned to power after a landslide victory in national elections last January. The police confirmed details of the incident and said they were detaining a man, aged 37.
Mrs Gandhi had said in her speech honouring Dr Ambedkar that it was the duty of the Government to protect the lives and property of harijans and the people of weaker sections in society.
