Use of 2,4,5-T
Sir,—Mr A. L. Mulholland, ■of Federated Farmers, describes the Agricultural Chemicals Board as a very responsible body which would ban forthwith 2,4,5-T or any other chemical, if there was a.vestige of proof that it was harmful... (“The Press,” April 12). If only this was true. The record should be put . straight. In 1972 a recommendation from a scientific sub-committee of the A.C.B. placing severe restrictions on the aerial spraying of 2,4,5-T was rejected by the full board, which decided that the benefits to the farming community outweighed the risks to the population at large. The board then was hardly promoting the use of 2,4,5-T on the basis of its harmlessness. Friends of the Earth are fully confident in the fairness of a request for an immediate ban on the aerial spraying of 2,4,5-T pending a public inquiry into the whole question of agricultural chemicals. —Yours, etc., ANDREW CAMPBELL. Friends of the Earth, i Christchurch. April 12, 1980.
