Mr Alan Gardner, a British spinal specialist, holds an expanding screw which he used successfully to correct curvature of the spine in Elizabeth Eves, aged 12. The screw, of a type normally used to tighten shrouds in the rigging of a yacht’s mast was fixed to healthy vertebrae above and below the affected area in Elizabeth’s spine. When tightened, the screw straightened and supported the spine. A successful bone graft followed and the screw was removed when the vertebrae healed. Mr Gardner has successfully treated two other patients by the same method.
