Haul may be $53M
NZPA-Reuter Cannes Thieves have carried away 25 safes used by Jewish guests of the Cannes Palace Hotel. Yesterday the police said their haul might exceed $53.5 million. The hotel management said most the money, jewels and other valuables in the safes belonged to Jewish tourists from Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany, Switzerland, the United States, South Africa, and Italy. The police told reporters the safes had been broken open and emptied on the spot, and described the hotel guests as a party of Israeli tourists. They said there was no indication that the safe room had been broken into, and they assumed a man had opened it from’ inside after hiding there. The police said 46 guests had already filed complaints for a total of $2.7 million, but when all the guests had reported their losses they expected the total haul to amount to or even exceed $53.5 million.
