Powers of A.C.C. ‘frightening’

The power of the Accident Compensation Commission to gain access to confidential medical records was frightening, said the medical superin-tendent-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr R. A. Fairgray) yesterday. Under the terms of the Hospitals Act. and the Accident Compensation Commission Act, information on the condition and treatment of patients in hospital was made available to the commission. If a doctor was reluctant to give information he could be forced to do so.

“This frightens me.” said Dr Fairgray. Many doctors were justifiably reluctant to produce confidential medical records often for use by lawyers. The board’s hospital services. committee will ask

the Hospital Boards’ Association and doctors’ representatives to seek changes in the law to protect patients’ confidentiality.
