N.Z. softball team loses in semi-final

NZPA Sydney A 1-0 victory to Canada saw the New Zealand women’s softball team put out of the “mini” world cup in Brisbane on Tuesday night. The Canadians ’ scored their run after two illegal pitch calls against the experienced Cheryl . Kemp, of Christchurch. The New Zealand team manager, Lyndsey Leask, said yesterday that other umpires and teams were “amazed” at the umpiring decisions during the New Zealand-Canada match.

The umpires claimed that Kemp was taking an extra step in her pitching. “They were taking the rule totally literally which

they don’t do anywhere else in the world unless the pitcher has a definite advantage,” said Miss Leask. “Even the other Australian umpires were disgusted with the whole thing.” In the game against Canada in the first semi-final the Canadians took the lead in the fourth innings but they were contained by the pitching of Debbie Mygind (Auckland) from then on. New Zealand, however, had trouble facing up to the Canadian pitching, taking only three hits from Dianne Materi and being struck out seven times. Canada and Japan will play off to determine which side will face the San Diego Trendsetters in the grand final.
