Rain alarm

Warnings were given by the Weather Office at Christchurch Airport late yesterday afternoon that 48 hours of heavy rain cculd be expected in Marlborough and inland North Canterbury. The police and catchment boards were alerted, but no problem had been reported by late last evening in spite of heavy falls at Kaikoura and Blenheim. At 9.30 p.m., however, forecasters were still expecting 100 mm of rain in the next 24 hours.

'The downpour was expected to be confined mainly to the foothills and ranges. A Weather Office spokesman said that 48 hours of rain could be expected because a very moist east-south-easterly airflow, which had lasted several days, had left unstable air as it moved off the South Island. He said that it was not unusual for a warning to be issued in such conditions.
