Notable classic double
NZPA Sydney Owners Mr and Mrs De,vid Hains, trainer Tommy Smith and jockey Malcolm Johnston combined to win the $75,000 A. J. C. Oaks (2400 m at Randwick yesterday to give them their second classic win in three days. Lowan Star’s win in the Oaks gave Mr and Mrs Hains, Smith and Johnston the prize three-year-old double after champion Kingston Town’s easy Derby win on Monday. The win also gave Smith and Johnston wins in the three major races over the Sydney Cup carnival. They combined to win Saturday’s $125,000 Doncaster Handicap (1600 m with Iko. Kingston Town is 5-4 favourite to win the fourth feature event, the $150,000 Sydney Cup (3200 m on Saturday. In the Oaks, Lowan Star, favourite at 7-2, led most of the way to beat Franconia (4-1), with Lady Capri (4-1) third.
