Share index breaks 400-mark
Rises outnumbered falls three to one on a strong New Zealand sharemarket yesterday. Trading' was active, and the N.Z.U.C. index gained 3.44 points to 401.09—just four points short of its all-time high. The rises were spread throughout the list: Fletcher ignored the Carter Holt moves and gained 7c to 382 c, motor shares continued their recovery, N.Z. Forest rose 6c to 283 c, N.Z. Insurance put on 10c. Tasman 3c. Wattie sc. and Brambles Burnett sold at 60c—the price of the Mogal bid—although the directors say that they will reject the ofter.
