Mainly speculative gains
Late profit-taking reduced speculative gains by several stocks on Australian sharemarkets yesterday, but stronger gold and base metal prices left room for scattered gains. Central Norseman led a stronger gold sector with a 40c gain to 600 c. MIM firmed 15c to 430 c on confirmation of a $740 million deal to supply coal to Japan. Despite predictions of a bullish report from the Ashton joint-venture partners, Ashton Mining finished the day 5c down at 270c._A 12c
rise by C.R.A. was attributed mostly to the company’s gold interests. Elsewhere, shares languished on light turnover, although B.H.P. recovered to finish 30c up at 1215 c and Myer firmed 8c to 160 c on rumours of a reconstruction. An announcement that Hartogen Energy had struck gas at its Kinkora No. 1 well in Queensland came after the market closed, but Hartogen was one of the better performers in the oil sector, with a 5c gain to 275 c.
