Northern Maori by-election

Sir, — In a thoughtful letter. D. J. Gates (April 5) underlines the contempt the National Party shows towards minority groups. The spokesman for secondary principals says 4000 school leavers are still without jobs. Here is a minority the Government hopes will go awav. Some of these are sure” to be in the Northern Maori electorate because Maoris do have a higher unemployment rate than pakehas. National hopes its absence will result- in a low, poll with Labour receiving a set-back. In this wet year, perhaps it gambles on a wet day when Labour supporters are said to stay home. That would leave the contest between Mr Rata and Social Credit’s Mr Toia. the result depending on the growth rate of the Northern-Maori movement. National has abandoned its supporters whose voting pattern is not traditionally affected by the weather and in the past they have been a loyal minority. This National. Party gamble

may not pay the expected dividend. — Yours, etc.. A. M. COATES. April 6, 1980.
