Periodic detention centres
Sir, — It seems that, cost is the main factor in the closing of the residential periodic detention centres. The research referred to was a minor effort and its findings inadequate, to be the main reason for the closing of the centres. The centres provide an appropriate communitybased sentehce for a particular type of offender, and should only be closed when extensive research • deems it necessary. The hasty closing of these centres is indicative of the bankrupt state of criminology in New Zealand. — Yours, etc.; K. F. FOLEY. April 8, 1980.
