Energy resources

Sir, — Your editorial (April 5) raised some excellent points regarding energy intensive industries in New Zealand. It is no longer sufficient to presume that because a scheme is big and costly that it will be in the country’s best interests. Comalco at present con-* sumes 13 per cent of all New Zealand’s electricity at a price which is well below the cost of producing that electricity. The cost of this subsidy 7, like it or not, is met by all other consumers — domestic, business, other industry, etc., and in 1979 amounted to approximately S2OM. Further investment in' similar proposals must-be given careful consideration not only because of the doubtful economic . benefits but also because major allocations of resources are involved; hence the possibility of a major blunder. TheGovernment’s vague promises of future prosperity from energy-intensive industries are not sufficient. As one “shareholder” in this country 7 I would like to see the accounts before I invest my 7 future in more Comalcos. — Yours, etc,, . ? - D. L. JACKSON. April 6, 1980.
