Belgian shipping line seeks N.Z. support

The conference line system adhered to by New Zealand producer boards has once a&ain come under attack by tho director of the Belgian non-confer-once A.B.C. Containcrline (Mr T. E. V. Rosenfeld), who has more than once been called a “pirate” by his competitors. Mr Rosenfeld, on a recent visit to New Zealand, carried his case for the cheaper nonconference service to farmers, shipping organisations, and politicians. . • He said that his present container service to and from New Zealand was losing money, and the only thing keeping him in the trade was the hope that the traditional conference line contractual agreements might soon be broken. Mr Rosenfeld and his associates have argued their case with the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon), senior members of the Cabinet, and both National and Labour Party caucus committees on transport. He said that about 75 per cent of Parliamentarians were in favour of abandoning the conference line scheme. The Exports and Shipping Council will hold a seminar on the controversial topic- next month, and two court cases are nending against the -producer boards, either by A.B.C. or on ■ts behalf, challenging the board’s legal right to withhold cargoes from non-conference carriers. -• <■: ARRIVALS Union Lyttelton (8.5 a.m.), 4500, Wellington (U.S.S.).
