Ship draws protest
NZPA Hakodate, Japan Angry Left-wingers yelled “Go home” in Hakodate at the visiting New Zealand naval frigate Canterbury, after claiming that it had taken part in a five-nation Pacific exercise to prepare for a possible nuclear war. While . 25 Rightists drove round the harbour shouting a welcome to the 2400-tonne ship, about 200 Leftists, watched closely by, the police, made their protest. The police said there were no clashes between the rival groups after the
arrival of the ship, which last month took part in the Rim of the Pacific exercise off Hawaii with Japan, the United States, Canada, and Australia. ■ Leftists delivered protest letters to the Mayor of Hakodate, a city in northern Japan, and to the commander of the frigate. The frigate is making a three-week good-will tour of Japan. The letters asserted that, the exercise was designed to prepare for a possible nuclear war, and that the frigate’s, visit to Hakodate could lead to its becoming a military port.
