Fund raising for radio service
Three Christchurch citi-zen-band radio enthusiasts plan to spend 72 hours of their Easter week-end cycling around Denton Park Oval to raise money for a C.B. emergency monitoring service. ;; .The -' . service,- - called R.E.A.C.T. (Radio Emergency Association Citizen Team), has only recently been, formed in Christchurch. Similar groups exist in other centres. Working from a permanent base, R.E.A.C.T. monitors emergency calls from amateur radio operators throughout Christchurch and relays the
messages to the appropriate emergency service: the police, Fire Service, St John Ambulance Association. A spokesman for R.E.A.C.T., Mr M. J. A. Keen, said he hoped the sponsored cycle marathon would raise about $lOOO. This would go towards the cost of electricity a telephone, and the maintenance of radio sets. The three cyclists will begin their marathon at 8 a.m. tomorrow. They will have five-minute breaks each hour and a meal break of half an hour a day.
