Shops held to ransom
NZPA-Reuter San Diego A man is holding the Safeway--supermarket chain in San Diego, California, to ransom by adding cyanide to jars of pickles and bottles of sauce on its shelves. The man is demanding diamonds.
One supermarket found a jar of pickles with six times the lethal, dose of cyanide after a man telephoned. A note attached to the jar claimed five other food items on the shelves contained cyanide. None were found. The note demanded a ransom of 50 loose diamonds. A bottle of sauce containing cyanide was- found in another supermarket, of the same chain after a telephone call, and customers were asked to return all items bought from the store .that were not canned.
“We simply do not know where he will strike next and how we will forestall him,” the county’s acting chief health officer, Dr Georgie Reaser, said. '
