Death of notable horseman
PA Wellington One of New Zealand’s leading jumping jockeys during the 1940 s and 50s, Mr Bill Reid, died in Palmerston North last week, aged 54. Reid included among his more notable successes the 1949 Wanganui Steeples, on Vernon, the 1958 Wellington Steeples, on First Act, and the 1951 Great Northern Hurdles on Cornishman. However, it was his ride on First Act in the 1951 Great Northern Steeples for which he was probably best known. He was first past the post on First Act, by four lengths from Redingote, but weighed in 12.2 kg light and was subsequently disqualified.
