Gas men cancel strike
PA 'Wellington Gas workers Jn the North [lsland and in Nelson and Marlborough have cancelled (strike action planned to start on April 7.
’ This results from an offer late on Monday by industry employers to resume award negotiations on April 10. The Wellington Employers’ Association advocate (Mr M. Clark), confirming the offer yesterday, said the Plumbers and Gas Fitters’ Union had accepted it, and had withdrawn the threat of industrial action. The threat was ’ over a failure by the employers and union to agree on a new wage scale for the industry after restructuring of the award and an updating of job classifications. The union had claimed a 15 per cent increase, while (employers had offered 10.4 [per cent. ' Union sources said that ]the action planned for April 9 had been cancelled.
