Greyhounds Centre traps hold key to N.Z. Cup

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

In most greyhound races, the dogs drawn ,in the inside or outside traps catch the eye as they clear the boxes, but it will be two dogs drawn in the middle which will be the centre of attention at Queen , Elizabeth II P’ rk tomorrow evening.

Starting from box No. 4 in the $l5OO New Zealand Cup, ( 'er the extreme'distance of; 820 m will be the national champion over 590 m, Lisa Havoc. Drawn outside her is the Sydney stayer, Fluent °Fiuent Top, which finished fourth recently in the Australian marathon championship at Dapto, is reputedly a strong stayer. It remains to be seen whether he can adapt to a new track- and keep in contact with the early pace to make his presence felt at the finish. ■ j Lisa Havoc is a remarkably versatile bitch which will probably start favourite , n the weight of home support. She had her first, start over the distance (820 m at th’ last meeting , and won with considerable ease. , But if the performances of Fluent Top and Lisa Havoc will capture most interest, it will certainly not be a match race between the two. Auckland is strongly represented by Celio Cohete, the surprise but decisive

winner of the. Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar over 832 m in Auckland last month, and Potential, a finalist in the country’s richest race, the Auckland Cup. However, the biggest danger might come from the Southland runner, Your Our Girl. The well-conformed black bitch made her first! visit to Queen; Elizabeth II Park for the Merv Gibson Trophy distance race in February and gave a grand front-running exhibition to account for last year’s champion, the ill-fated Sarkh Sal. There will be respect, too, fo- the Wellington runner, Imperial Amy. She had her first run on the track last month and made it a winning. one by beating Lisa Havoc over 540 m. The extra; distance might be against her, but she is bound to give plenty of cheek over the first 600 m. Canterbury’s other representatives, Arithmetic and Little Devil, were well beaten by Lisa Havoc at the last meeting and they will start at liberal odds. Fields:— 7 p.m.— ARANUI STAKES C2; S4om.
