CASE FOR CAMERON

By

R. T. BRITTENDEN

Bevan Congdon has played in more test-win-ning New Zealand cricket teams than anyone else.He took part in seven of

the 11 tests New Zealand has won. Frank Cameron, however, can claim a very close connection with no fewer than nine of New Zealand’s winning sides. In 1961-62, he played in two tests in South Africa which were won, and in his first year as a national selector, 1968-69, there was a victory over the West Indies at Wellington. He has been a selector ever since, and there have been six more successes. When the Cricket Council’s board of control makes its plans for its tour of Australia next summer, the manager is almost certain to be a

member of the board. If the board adheres to that policy, it might —it should — give thought to sending Cameron with the side as an assistant manager and coach. It is not mere enthusiasm for the game, and for the selection task, that has made Frank Cameron an integral part of New Zealand test teams for the last 12 seasons He is a very shrewd observer, and he has the ability to convey his ideas to others. The New Zealand players would certainly welcome having their mentor and guide with them.
