London There was a time when it v would hardly have been cric:!ket, but today it is hailed as ’ the biggest sponsorship deal ; . to be secured by any county J cricket side to date. q The Swedish car manu- • jfacturer, Saab, Ltd, and its i dealership in Chard, Hartnoil , Motors, have agreed to a 'jthree-year programme with 'Somerset County Cricket ; [ Club involving six new cars ! and financial support for the [country’s junior coaching ‘[programme. jj The fleet of cars, with a ‘,‘new one supplied every year, ! will be used to transport the iteam to and from matches i round the country. j The sponsorship is reported [to be worth between IELOO.OOO and £115,000. i “The cars will reduce our overheads and travel costs, ‘and Saab’s contribution to
our coaching programme will help us and cricket as a whole,” said the club’s chairman, Mr Max Jeffrey. In return for the sponsorship, the slogan, “Saab Hart[nol! and Somerset — together we make a great j team,” will be featured on
tickets and posters and round the county ground at Taunton. The car dealers will have the right to mount displays ;at the county’s opening home [fixture and during the match [against the touring West ! Indies side.
