The Fletcher bid for Carter Holt shook the New Zealand sharemarket out of its recent lethargy yesterday. The N.Z.U.C. index rose 6.28 points to close at 390.51, a new peak for the year, in busy firmer trading. Carter Holt rose 117 c to 425 c, the price offered by Fletcher. Other timber companies firmed in sentiment with the bid — Odlins up 5c to 70c and Henderson and Pollard 10c to 360 c. Timber-related issues also gained ground, including N.Z. Forest Products, Canterbury Timber Products, Tasman, and U.E.B. A special sale of 900,000 Rex Consolidated shares at 212.5 c '(ex dividend), 27.8 per cent of the issued capita, was a feature of trading. Rex last sold for 235 c.
