Earnings petition for disabled
PA Auckland Thousands of disabled New Zealanders will be able to have unlimited earnings and keep their pension if a petition to parliament by an Auckland woman is successful. Mrs Esther KcesingStyles, disabled by polio js a child and a car accident several years ago, hopes the petition will put disabled people in the same category as the blind. Disabled people can earn only $25 a week before their pension is reduced. Blind people are allowed unlimited earning's and their pension us unaffected. “It is harder to be physically disabled than blind,”
Mrs Keesing-Styles saidShe said she had had backing and. encouragement for her petition from the Governor-General (Sir Keith Holyoake), and the Minister of Health (Mr Gair). Mrs Keesing-Styles" is a swimming coach for disabled people. She competed in the British Disabled Field Sports between 1976 and 1978 and won three gold medals for swimming, a gold and silver medal for javelin throwing and a silver medal in the discus event. In September, 1978, she drove , 20,000 km oyer 13 countries on an international promotional tour for. handicapped competitors.
