Attempts to charge for drugs opposed

PA Wellington The Labour Party caucus committee on health says it condemns attempts by the Minister of ' Health (Mr Gair) to make way for charging for prescriptions. “At the pharmaceutical manufacturers’ conference recently, Mr Gair repeated for the second year running a suggestion that some charge should be imposed on prescriptions,” said Labour’s shadow Minister of Health, Mr F. D. O’Flynn. “This is an attack on the basic principle of the social security health system introduced by the first Labour Government. The principle was that all necessary health care should be available to everyone without charge when needed.” Mr O’Flynn said the committee was concerned that over the last four years the Government had continually increased the number of drugs patients were required to pay for, and called for this to be stopped. “The Government’s policy seems to be to tax the sick rather than to control the rising drug expenditure by other means.'
