Pigs exported to Singapore

The expprt development ' division of New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury has just completed the .first of a series of live pig exports'., to South-East Asia. Two consignments of pure-bred Landrace and Welsh pigs (mainly gilts), totalling 111, were flown to- Singapore last month in >what is believed to be the largest commercial export .of pigs from the South Island. The export development manager for the company (Mr R. J. Coats) said the order was achieved after about six months negotia- : tions, which included gaining the approval of the Singapore Government. “Singapore is self-suf-ficient in pork, but we were able to determine

that there was a need for new stock to improve local breeding lines,” said Mr Coats. Mr Coats said the consighment was only the first of a series which were expected to be exported to South-East Asian countries. The pigs were personally selected on a quality basis by a Singapore client at the property of G. F. Timperley and Sons, Coutts Island, one of the country’s leading breeders. In recent months, the company has also made sales of significant quantities of frozen deer velvet t and fish to South-East Asia. Mr Coats said the company was handling a number of overseas inquiries for livestock and for sec-ond-hand, heavy construction equipment.
